Welcome to Harris Health and Wellness Direct Primary Care

Welcome! I am Dr. Malati Harris, a board-certified physician specializing in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine. I have had the pleasure of practicing medicine for the past 21 years here in Lawrence.

I graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago in 2001 and completed my residency in family medicine at Trinity Lutheran/Research Medical Center in 2004. I completed my board certification in Obesity Medicine in 2024.

While medicine has been an enormous part of my life, I have many other random interests. From all types of crafting to powerlifting to forcing my 17 and 21 yr old children to break out of escape rooms with me.

What is Direct Primary Care (DPC)?

What is Direct Primary Care (DPC)?

Here's How DPC Works in Family Medicine:

Simple Membership: You pay a single, affordable monthly fee directly to our practice.

Unlimited Access: That fee covers nearly all your primary care services, including:

*Generous Appointment Times: Talk to your doctor without feeling rushed. Same-day or next-day sick visits are the norm.

*Comprehensive Wellness Visits: Thorough annual physicals and preventive care.

*Chronic Disease Management: Dedicated support for conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or obesity medicine.

*Acute Care: Treatment for illnesses and injuries (colds, flu, infections, sprains, etc.).

*Minor Procedures: In-office stitches, skin biopsies, wart removals, etc.

*Direct Communication: Easy access to your doctor via phone, text, or secure messaging.

*Significant Discounts: On labs, imaging, and wholesale medications – often at a fraction of typical costs.

No Insurance Hassles: No copays. No deductibles. No surprise bills for covered primary care services. You know exactly what your care costs each month.

Focus on YOU: Your doctor has fewer patients than in traditional practices. This means more time to truly understand your health, build a strong relationship, and create personalized care plans, improving healthcare accessibility.

Why DPC feels different

Your Doctor, Always Available: Need quick advice? Have a question about test results? Reach out directly.

Time to Listen & Understand: Appointments aren't squeezed into 10-minute slots. We take the time you need.

Transparent Pricing: No hidden fees for covered services. Your monthly fee covers it. Proactive & Preventative: We focus on keeping you healthy, not just treating you when you're sick.

Less Bureaucracy: More time for care, less time spent on insurance paperwork. Do I Still Need Insurance? Yes, absolutely. DPC replaces your primary care coverage, not major medical insurance. We highly recommend keeping a health insurance plan (or a health share plan) to cover unexpected major events like hospitalizations, surgeries, or specialist care. DPC works beautifully alongside these plans, covering your everyday healthcare needs affordably and conveniently.

My Personal Rant

People that know me understand my concerns regarding the current state of American healthcare and the role of for-profit insurance companies. Direct Primary Care is the model of healthcare that resonates with me, especially in the context of family medicine. The time wasted battling with insurance companies to approve basic medications or diagnostic tests is exhausting and complicates the already challenging task of providing adequate healthcare accessibility to more patients each day with insufficient staffing. By not contracting with insurance companies and instead partnering directly with my patients, I can dedicate the necessary time to each individual, making decisions based on evidence-based medicine rather than what an insurer will cover. This model also allows me to offer same-day or next-day appointments, enhancing healthcare accessibility. Patients can easily reach me via text, email, or virtually, without the frustrating delays often associated with traditional systems. I genuinely believe this approach is the right direction for all healthcare, including obesity medicine, where direct communication and accessibility are crucial.
